Whispers of a visionary echo along this very street. This is Boulevard Paul Riquet. It is more than just a road in Marseille. It is a testament to the ambition and ingenuity of a remarkable man.

Paul Riquet was born in Béziers in 1609. He wasn’t a trained engineer. He was a tax collector. Yet, he dreamed of connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. This was a shortcut to avoid sailing around Spain. Pirates infested those waters.

The idea wasn’t new. Even the Romans considered it. But Riquet had a plan. He proposed it to Jean-Baptiste Colbert. Colbert was Louis XIV’s finance minister. The king approved the project.

Imagine the scale of the challenge. Two hundred and forty kilometers of waterway. It needed to navigate hills. It needed a water supply that could last through dry summers. Riquet invented new lock systems. He also created a massive reservoir. It was called the Bassin de St Ferréol. Six million cubic meters of water. This supplied the canal.

The work was expensive. It stretched Riquet’s personal fortune. Even King Louis XIV began to lose interest. But Riquet persevered. He oversaw incredible engineering feats. The Fonseranes Lock Staircase was one. The Malpas Tunnel was another. It was the world’s first navigable canal tunnel.

Riquet didn’t see the canal’s completion. He died in 1680. This was just eight months before it opened.

But his legacy lives on. Louis XIV recognized his achievements. He made Riquet Baron of Bonrepos in 1666. The Canal du Midi stands as a monument to his vision. Boulevard Paul Riquet reminds us of the man who dared to dream big. This street carries his name with pride. It serves as a daily reminder of his contribution to Marseille. Take a moment to appreciate the vision of Paul Riquet. His dream changed transportation forever.
