Gazing down Boulevard Gassendi, can you sense the echoes of its namesake? Boulevard Gassendi isn’t named for the philosopher Pierre Gassendi, as many assume. This boulevard honors Ernest Gasquy, a prominent Marseille banker from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Boulevard Gassendi arose from the division of the Poussibet countryside in 1922. Its north-south orientation was designed to serve the newly developed residential areas springing up in the 12th arrondissement of Marseille. After World War II, Boulevard Gassendi became even more crucial. It linked Avenue des Caillols to Chemin de Saint-Jean du Désert via Avenue de Garlaban, extending its reach in an east-west direction. Interestingly, two avenues intersecting Boulevard Gassendi, Avenue Vian and Avenue Cécile, honor Gasquy’s wife and granddaughter. These avenues, developed between 1924 and 1930, add a personal touch to the area’s history. So, as you stroll along Boulevard Gassendi, remember it’s not just a street. It’s a testament to Marseille’s urban development and a quiet tribute to the Gasquy family.
