Who was François Arlaud, and why does a boulevard in Marseille bear his name? Boulevard François Arlaud isn’t just a street. It’s a quiet tribute to a young man’s courage in the face of unimaginable hardship. François Arlaud, born in Marseille in 1924, lived a life intertwined with the tumultuous events of World War II. His family, originally from Italy, sought refuge in Mezel, Puy-de-Dôme, to escape the grip of famine in occupied France. In Mezel, François and his brothers joined the Resistance. He became known as “Come” or “Victor” among his comrades in the 8th FTP Company. François participated in daring operations, disrupting German supply lines and challenging their authority. Boulevard François Arlaud whispers stories of his bravery in sabotaging railways and ambushing convoys. In August 1944, while recovering from an illness, he was arrested in Mezel, likely betrayed by a local militiaman. He was then transported with a German convoy heading towards Limoges. During an attack on the convoy by the FFI at Pont du Fraisse, François attempted to escape but was tragically caught and executed. His body was found near a burned-out house, a stark reminder of the brutal reality of war. Though his life was cut short at just 20 years old, François Arlaud’s spirit lives on in the boulevard that bears his name. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary people in extraordinary times. Boulevard François Arlaud stands as a testament to his courage and the enduring resilience of the human spirit against tyranny.
