Can you imagine a street named after two ducks? Here on Boulevard des Deux Canards, such whimsy is a reality. Boulevard des Deux Canards is tucked away in Marseille’s 9th arrondissement. This street, whose name translates to “Boulevard of the Two Ducks,” has a local charm that often goes unnoticed by tourists. Boulevard des Deux Canards has seen its share of wear and tear over the years. Residents have been requesting renovations for quite some time. In fact, the local CIQ (citizen’s interest committee) and residents had been petitioning for repairs to the roadway for three years. Finally, during a general assembly, the local town hall committed to undertaking the roadworks in 2024. The renovations were scheduled to take place between October 28th and November 6th, 2024. To facilitate the road resurfacing, parking restrictions were put in place along Boulevard des Deux Canards between Boulevard Canlong and the end of the cul-de-sac. From October 21st to December 20th, 2024, parking was prohibited and considered a serious obstruction. Only technical vehicles belonging to the construction company were permitted. Traffic was also restricted, with access limited to residents’ garages, deliveries, construction vehicles, and emergency services. The Boulevard des Deux Canards may not be as glamorous as the Vieux-Port or as historically significant as Notre-Dame de la Garde. But it offers a glimpse into the everyday life of Marseille’s residents. It’s a reminder that even in a bustling metropolis, there’s room for a touch of the quirky, a dash of the unexpected. So next time you’re in Marseille, take a detour down Boulevard des Deux Canards. You might just find yourself charmed by its simple, unassuming character.
