Along Boulevard de Saint-Loup, the wind whispers tales of a rich and layered past. This bustling thoroughfare, once a simple path, now carries the echoes of centuries. Boulevard de Saint-Loup isn’t just a road; it’s a journey through time. It sits in the 10th arrondissement of Marseille, a vibrant district with a unique character. Originally, the area belonged to the Abbaye de Saint-Victor in the 11th century. Imagine a landscape covered with vineyards, a dense forest descending from the hills, and the Huveaune river edged with marshes. The boulevard itself follows the route of an ancient road connecting Marseille and Toulon. This road, once called Route Royale, Impériale, and Nationale under different regimes, is believed to have evolved from a Roman path, possibly even older, tracing back to a Celtic route. Boulevard de Saint-Loup, therefore, stands as a modern artery pulsating over ancient veins. This area housed the workers of the many mills along the Huveaune river, powered by the Grand Béal canal. These mills played a crucial role in the local economy. Later, the area became a haven for agricultural activities, hosting dairy farmers, market gardeners, and horticulturists, many of whom were of Piedmontese origin from Northern Italy. The 11th century saw the land as a tapestry of vineyards and forests, under the ownership of Saint-Victor Abbey. The Huveaune, now a defining feature of the landscape, was then bordered by marshes that would later be drained. Abbé Cayol, in 1866, offered glimpses into this past, describing the forest of La Garde stretching to Saint-Cyr and pre-Christian square mausoleums nestled between the river and the mountains. Another intriguing historical tidbit from 1872 suggests that Albigensians occupied the Huveaune valley and surrounding mountains during Julius Caesar’s siege of Marseille. Boulevard de Saint-Loup offers a glimpse into the city’s rural heritage, a far cry from the bustling port we know today. Life along Boulevard de Saint-Loup was a vibrant mix of work and celebration. The annual Pastorale de Maurel in January and the Saint-Eloi festival in July were important community events. The Saint-Eloi festival involved a procession from the Place de l’Octroi to Boulevard Reynaud de Trets, with blessings for participants and horses. The auctioning of the Gaillardet, a horse’s harness, added a unique touch to the celebrations. As you stroll along Boulevard de Saint-Loup today, you’ll find it hard to imagine the cabanons and bastides that once dotted the landscape. While these structures have vanished, their names live on in the area’s place names. Today, Boulevard de Saint-Loup pulsates with modern life, yet it whispers its history to those who listen.
