Slipping through time, imagine Paris in 1670. King Louis XIV, the Sun King, commissions a royal nursery. This nursery, overflowing with vibrant flora, would supply the royal residences with their botanical splendor. This nursery gave its name to the now bustling Boulevard de la Pépinière. The Boulevard de la Pépinière wasn’t always a boulevard. It began as a humble path, known as the “Chemin des Pépinières”. This path meandered towards the royal nursery, or “Pépinière du Roule”. This second royal nursery, established in 1720, north of the Grand Égout, perfumed the air with the scent of blossoms until its closure in 1826. The Boulevard de la Pépinière holds echoes of these fragrant beginnings. The very name, “Pépinière”, meaning nursery, whispers of this verdant past. In 1782, this path, widened and paved, became the Rue de la Pépinière. This new street extended the recently opened Rue d’Angoulême, now part of the elegant Rue La Boétie. The Boulevard de la Pépinière thus became a vital artery connecting the burgeoning city to its botanical heart. Even in its modern form, the Boulevard de la Pépinière retains a link to its blossoming past. The Belleval Hotel, located at 16 Boulevard de la Pépinière, stands as a testament to this history. Imagine the whispers of history within its walls, the echoes of rustling leaves and fragrant blooms. This area, once a source of natural beauty for the royal court, continues to flourish as a vibrant part of Parisian life.
