The Bastille was a formidable prison until it fell in 1789. Look around you. This is Boulevard de la Bastille, one of the most important streets in Paris. It runs alongside the Port de Plaisance de l’Arsenal, a charming marina. The boulevard extends from Place Mazas to Place de la Bastille. It was known as Rue de la Contrescarpe, which translates to “the counterscarp,” before being renamed in 1898. The counterscarp is the slope that runs at the base of an embankment, and the Place de la Bastille was a historical site for centuries. Boulevard de la Bastille runs from Place Mazas to Place de la Bastille. This boulevard is one of the city’s main arteries.
