Nestled within the University of Bremen’s Garden of Nations, the Boule-Spiel sculpture captivates with its intriguing arrangement of granite spheres. The Boule-Spiel, meaning “Boules Game”, isn’t just a random collection of rocks. This six-part ensemble, featuring eight granite spheres of varying sizes and sandstone run marks, is a 1983 creation by Bremen artist Bernd Uiberall. The Boule-Spiel found its new home here in 2010, relocated from its previous spot in front of the former Landeszentralbank. The university seized a unique opportunity to add this piece to the Garden of Nations. This artistic addition complements the garden’s existing appeal as a popular relaxation spot for students and staff. The garden itself is a beautiful space, born from an idea of the Bremen Consular Corps. They envisioned a connection between the university and the world, symbolized by three types of cherry trees blooming at different times. Now, the Boule-Spiel enhances this global theme. It stands as a testament to Bremen’s artistic spirit and the university’s commitment to enriching its campus environment. It invites contemplation and perhaps even a friendly game, in spirit, of its namesake.
