Two colossal granite boulders dominate Mabley Green. These aren’t just rocks. They’re the Boulder Sculpture by John Frankland. These massive stones, each weighing up to 85 tonnes, arrived here in 2008. Their journey began in Cornwall, like meteorites landing in east London. Boulder Sculpture isn’t just for viewing. It’s an interactive experience. Visitors are encouraged to climb, touch, and explore these monumental forms.

The Boulder Sculpture is part of a larger cultural regeneration project in the area. Artist John Frankland envisioned this installation while on a pebble beach in Cornwall. He was struck by the inherent beauty of the boulders. Frankland realized that changing their context could transform their meaning. He brought two twelve-foot-high granite boulders from Carnsew quarry near Falmouth to east London. One resides in Shoreditch Park. The other sits here before you in Mabley Green. Each boulder interacts uniquely with its environment, acting as a magnet for curiosity.

Transporting these behemoths was a feat of engineering. Contractor Fitzpatrick had to create special steel frames for the HGVs. A police escort accompanied these rocky giants on their journey. The project manager compared it to recreating Stonehenge. The installation received £100,000 in funding from Deutsche Bank. Hackney council and the Shoreditch Trust also contributed.

The contrast between the two locations highlights Frankland’s vision. Shoreditch Park, filled with trees and undergoing a £1 million transformation, offers a lush backdrop. Mabley Green, a more open field between a housing estate and the A12, presents a different perspective. This difference emphasizes how environment shapes the meaning of art. The boulders invite interaction. They encourage a connection with art that is often absent in traditional sculptures. They symbolize the regeneration of the area, not just physically but culturally. The Boulder Sculpture at Mabley Green stands as a testament to the power of art to transform space and engage the community. It’s a reminder that art can be both monumental and accessible.
