From its humble beginnings as a mere consulate in Remagen the Botschaft der Republik Korea Außenstelle Bonn has a rich history. The year was 1954. Generalkonsul Hanho Rhi cleverly secured diplomatic status. This was without his government’s knowledge. It was a bold move that laid the groundwork for what was to come. The consulate was later moved to Cologne.
Soon after establishing diplomatic relations in 1957 South Korea opened a mission in Bonn. This mission quickly upgraded to a full embassy in 1958. The embassy’s office was initially housed in a grand villa on Adenauerallee 124. This building also served as the ambassador’s residence. Over the years the residence moved multiple times. It moved from Kohlkaul to Bad Godesberg then to Kessenich and finally to Muffendorf.
Interestingly in the 1960s the embassy’s office under Botschaftsrat Yang was involved in KCIA activities. These activities involved the abduction of South Korean citizens. In the early 1980s South Korea acquired Villa Camphausen in Mehlem. This villa became the new embassy residence. At one point the embassy’s defense technology department was located in Südstadt while the press and culture department was in Plittersdorf.
When Germany moved its capital to Berlin in 1999 the main South Korean embassy followed suit. But a branch office remained in Bonn. This office was initially located in a building previously used by the Norwegian and Malaysian embassies. Later the Bonn branch moved to the Andreas-Hermes-Haus in Hochkreuz.
Today the Botschaft der Republik Korea Außenstelle Bonn stands as a testament to the enduring relationship between South Korea and Germany. It’s a symbol of diplomatic ties and cultural exchange. The Außenstelle continues its essential role. It handles consular matters for Nordrhein-Westfalen Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland. It also maintains diplomatic contact with German ministries in Bonn. The building on Godesberger Allee stands proud a quiet yet significant presence in Bonn. It continues its work in fostering understanding and cooperation between two nations.
