Tucked away amidst the grandeur of the Palace of Versailles, lies a sanctuary of tranquility and charm: the Bosquet de la Reine. The Bosquet de la Reine wasn’t always here. It replaced a labyrinth, a whimsical creation filled with fountains depicting Aesop’s fables. Imagine strolling through winding pathways, the scent of roses filling the air. This haven, designed for Marie-Antoinette, offered a retreat from the prying eyes of the court. Unlike other bosquets in the gardens, the Bosquet de la Reine was celebrated for its diverse and vibrant vegetation. Exotic species like the tulip tree from Virginia and the snowdrop tree painted the landscape with color. Sadly, by the 19th century, the Bosquet de la Reine had fallen into disrepair. Mother Nature, too, took its toll. The devastating storm of 1999 left it a shadow of its former glory. Today, after extensive restoration, the Bosquet de la Reine is reborn. It stands as a breathtaking testament to 18th-century landscaping and a tribute to Marie-Antoinette’s love for nature’s beauty.
