Wonder how Borups Plads got its name? It’s a tribute to Ludvig Christian Borup. He was a Conservative politician. Borup unexpectedly died in 1903. He’d just attended the Copenhagen City Hall inauguration.

Borups Plads is more than just a name. It’s a Neoclassical apartment block. Alf Cock-Clausen designed it for the city. It was completed in 1924. The square graces the corner of Lundtoftegade.

This area has a fascinating history. Construction of Borups Allé began in 1902. After Borup’s death, the council honored him. In December 1903, they named it Borups Allé. Frederiksberg Municipal Council agreed soon after.

Initially, Borups Allé was a tree-lined avenue. It ran through fairly rural areas. A bridge crossed the small Ladegårdsåen River. Brønshøj, including today’s Bispebjerg, had just joined Copenhagen. The city set aside land for public housing.

But demand was low at first. In 1908, Copenhagen had 11000 empty apartments. The situation changed dramatically in the 1920s. A housing shortage led to large residential projects.

Borups Allé was widened in the 1960s. This accommodated increasing car traffic. Bispeengbuen was built between 1970 and 1972.

Around Borups Plads, you’ll see notable buildings. Kay Fisker’s Hornbækhus is a prime example. It shows the large residential blocks of 1920s Copenhagen. Hornbækhus is huge. It contains 290 apartments.

Genforeningspladsen is also nearby. It features residential blocks around a sports ground. This complex has facilities for soccer and tennis. In winter, it transforms into an ice-skating circuit.

Borups Plads also has a residents’ association. This association ensures the area remains vibrant. They organize working weekends. Residents tidy cellars and maintain gardens. They also look after the courtyard furniture.

The building itself dates back to 1923. It reflects the Neoclassical style of that time. The area’s preservation status sets standards for maintenance.

Recent projects have improved the area. These include new heating systems and courtyard renovations. There have also been facade repairs.

In 2009, a fire damaged the roof. This required residents to relocate temporarily. The association continually updates the building’s facilities. They focus on sustainability and modern living.

Today, Borups Plads is a blend of history and community. It reflects Copenhagen’s architectural evolution. This square stands as a testament to thoughtful urban planning. It also shows community engagement. Take a moment to appreciate this unique space.
