David Kidd rebuilt Borthwick Church in 1863. He was the proprietor of Inveresk Paper Mills. The cost was 3400 pounds. That is about $300,000 today. Pews are reserved for the Kidd family in the church today.

Borthwick Parish Church has records dating back centuries. Birth records exist from 1706. Marriage records start from 1700. Death records begin in 1784. These are held in the General Register Office for Scotland.

The Reverend Dr William Robertson was born in this parish in 1721. He was a famous Scottish historian. Robertson became Principal of Edinburgh University.

The churchyard provides a deceptive view. The castle is over three times as tall as the church steeple.
