Can a simple stone post hold the weight of a nation’s hopes? Here at the Borne de la Première République, it silently bears witness to a tumultuous era. This unassuming granite marker, nestled against a wall on rue de Vaugirard, isn’t just any stone. It’s a milestone, a tangible link to the French First Republic. The Borne de la Première République is one of the last remaining “milliaires” in Paris. These markers, erected under royal decree, once dotted French roads every thousand toises (roughly two kilometers). They measured the distance from the heart of Paris: the facade of Notre Dame Cathedral. This particular borne marks the first thousand toises on the route de Vaugirard, as indicated by the vertical notch representing the number one. Look closer. Just below the “one,” you’ll see a smooth, oval indentation. Imagine it adorned with a fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. During the Revolution, decrees ordered the removal of all feudal insignia. The fleur-de-lis on this borne, along with those on six others scattered throughout Paris, was erased. A record from the National Archives details the removal, listing the locations of these seven bornes, including this one on rue de Vaugirard, identified by its then-address of number 1508. The Borne de la Première République stands as a silent testament to this turbulent shift in power. From monarchy to republic, it has witnessed the birth of a nation and the erasure of its old symbols. It reminds us that even seemingly insignificant objects can hold the echoes of monumental change. Its survival is a testament to the quiet power of history, preserved in unexpected corners of the city.
