What secrets does the Borghesischer Fechter hold? Here, before the imposing replica, we unravel the story of this captivating artwork. The Borghesischer Fechter, also known as the Borghese Gladiator, isn’t actually a gladiator. This life-sized statue depicts a warrior, likely engaged in combat against a horseman. The original, a marble copy of a 3rd-century BC bronze statue, was unearthed in the early 17th century near Porto d’Anzio, possibly within the remnants of Nero’s villa. The Borghesischer Fechter first graced the Villa Borghese in Rome, in a room named after the statue itself. Imagine the scene: the fragmented sculpture, broken into 17 pieces, meticulously restored by Nicolas Cordier in 1611. Later, in 1807, it was sold to Napoleon by Camillo Borghese and relocated to the Louvre Museum in Paris, where it remains today. Agasias of Ephesus, son of Dositheus, is named as the artist in the inscription. Although mistakenly labeled a gladiator due to early restorations, the Borghesischer Fechter portrays a swordsman, a “fencer”. Ironically, the swordsman’s sword and shield are missing from the marble rendition. The Borghesischer Fechter’s fame spread, inspiring numerous replicas across Europe. Two replicas stand proudly in Salzburg’s Mirabellgarten, crafted by Andreas Götzinger in 1689 and Michael Bernhard Mandl around 1690-1695. Another pair graces the grounds of Leopoldskron Palace. In the 18th century, the Borghesischer Fechter was highly admired, replicated in bronze for Charles I of England (now in Windsor Castle), and forming the centerpiece of Isaac de Cau’s parterre at Wilton House (now at Houghton House, Norfolk). Casts can be found in Petworth House, Knole’s “green court”, Lützschena Castle Park, and even the Goethe Annex staircase of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library. The Borghesischer Fechter has a remarkable artistic legacy. Its exquisite anatomical detail serves as a model for anatomical studies, even inspiring a chapter in Gottfried Keller’s novel “Der grüne Heinrich”. It appears in Johann Peter Hasenclever’s genre painting “Atelierszene”. The Borghesischer Fechter continues to captivate. Its story resonates, from ancient battlefields to grand villas, and from fragmented pieces to celebrated artwork.
