“Seventeenth-century fortifications?” you might wonder, glancing at Borgbygården. No, Borgbygården in Copenhagen isn’t a military structure. It’s a charming courtyard, a hidden pocket of calm amidst the bustling city. Borgbygården translates to “Citizen’s Yard,” a name that hints at its history. While Copenhagen boasts grand palaces and bustling squares, Borgbygården offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary Copenhageners. The courtyard is tucked away, much like the stories it holds. While the exact origins of Borgbygården remain a mystery shrouded by time, we know the surrounding area was part of a 1649 expansion of Copenhagen. Streets were named after Danish territories, royalty, and the upper classes. Imagine craftsmen and shopkeepers, the “citizens,” going about their daily lives, their workshops and homes clustered around this peaceful courtyard. Borgbygården witnessed the city’s growth and transformation, surviving both the devastating fires of 1728 and 1795. It even escaped the British bombardment of 1807 largely unscathed. The area, however, wasn’t immune to the aftershocks of these disasters. An influx of people displaced by the fires and bombardment sought refuge and affordable housing in the area. Borgbygården and the surrounding streets became increasingly crowded. Gardens were built over, and extra floors were added to existing buildings. Conditions deteriorated, and by the mid-19th century, the once-pleasant neighborhood had become a slum. Poverty, vice, and crime were rampant. By the mid-20th century, the area was condemned. The old buildings, including the magnificent Mint Master’s House on nearby Borgergade, were demolished. Borgbygården as we see it today emerged from this period of urban renewal. The Mint Master’s House, thankfully, was meticulously dismantled and stored. It now stands proudly reconstructed in The Old Town in Aarhus, a testament to 17th-century Copenhagen architecture. Although Borgbygården itself is a product of 20th-century rebuilding, its location holds centuries of Copenhagen history. It’s a reminder of how the city has evolved, from a small fishing village to a thriving metropolis, with the lives of ordinary citizens woven into its very fabric.
