Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Copenhagen’s history, lies Borchs Kollegium. A quiet sentinel on Store Kannikestræde, it has witnessed centuries of student life. Borchs Kollegium whispers stories of resilience and rebirth. Founded in 1691 by Ole Borch, a chemist at the University of Copenhagen, its initial purpose was to house sixteen poor, pious, and learned students. Imagine the intellectual fervor within its original walls, complete with Borch’s library and chemical laboratories. Sadly, this hub of learning was not spared the ravages of the Great Fire of Copenhagen in 1728. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, Borchs Kollegium rose again. Utilizing remnants of the old walls, the building was reconstructed, a testament to its enduring spirit. This resilience was tested once more during the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807. Students of Borchs Kollegium bravely participated in skirmishes against British troops, but the Kollegium was tragically burned to the ground. Again, Borchs Kollegium defied destruction. The current building, designed by architect Peder Malling, was inaugurated in 1825. It stands today as a symbol of continuity and academic pursuit. Within these hallowed halls resided numerous notable figures. Ludvig Holberg, the renowned Danish dramatist, essayist, and historian, served as the head of Borchs Kollegium from 1748 to 1754. The dormitory also housed Jens Paludan-Müller, a Danish war hero who tragically fell in the Second Schleswig War. A memorial stone in the garden serves as a poignant reminder of his sacrifice. Borchs Kollegium, with its 19 rooms, continues to provide a home for students today. From shared kitchens and bathrooms to a library, TV room, and even a croquet court, it offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities. As you stand before Borchs Kollegium, remember its tumultuous journey. It embodies the enduring power of education and community in the face of adversity.
