Picture the Boom Island Lighthouse standing proudly. It’s not just a beacon. It’s a silent storyteller of Minneapolis’s vibrant past. This lighthouse a historic landmark sits on Boom Island in Boom Island Park. It’s easy to forget that this was once a bustling island. A century ago the Mississippi River flowed differently. Boom Island was truly an island. Loggers used the island as a sorting station for lumber. They stamped logs with company marks. Then the logs floated downriver to the sawmills. This led to the island’s name Boom Island. A log boom not an explosion.

The logging era faded. The city grew. The back channel filled in. Boom Island became connected to the mainland. The industrial age transitioned to a rail era. The Wisconsin Central Railway established a train yard. This included a roundhouse and 28 tracks. Trains used a pedestrian bridge connecting Boom Island to Nicollet Island. Can you imagine the sounds and smells of that bustling time? The clang of trains the scent of coal smoke?

The railway eventually abandoned the yard. The island was close to becoming an Interstate highway. But the community fought back. They successfully stopped a federal project. Instead Boom Island transformed into a park. This happened in 1987. It was formally completed in 1988. Today the Boom Island Lighthouse welcomes visitors. It offers stunning views of the Minneapolis skyline. It serves as a gateway to the Mississippi River Regional Trail. The lighthouse is closed but the site is open. There’s plenty to see and do in Boom Island Park. Imagine picnicking or kayaking nearby. Or simply enjoying the historic charm of the Boom Island Lighthouse. It’s a reminder of Minneapolis’s transformation. This lighthouse continues to attract visitors and watch over the city.
