Perhaps you have heard of a church that started with outrage and compassion. I want to tell you about the Bonny Downs Baptist Church. This is a story of faith, action and community transformation. Bonny Downs Baptist Church has been worshipping and serving in East Ham for over a century.

It began in the 1890s with Charles Howe. He was deeply moved by the poverty and suffering he witnessed in the Bonny Downs area. He saw children without shoes and families struggling to survive. Men were working in inhumane conditions.

Charles Howe decided to take action. He started adult literacy classes because many residents could not read. He organized free summer holidays and day trips for families. These trips offered respite from their difficult lives. Slowly, more people joined his prayer groups, Sunday schools and alcoholism support groups. This was the start of Bonny Downs Baptist Church. Officially, it was founded as Bonny Downs Mission in 1908.

The growing congregation soon needed more space. So they collected donations in a pub. They used their skills to build a church hall. It opened on Bonny Downs Road now Darwell Close in 1933. The hall became a sanctuary during World War II. It provided comfort during the relentless bombing of the Blitz. Miraculously, a bomb that hit the hall did not explode.

By the end of the 20th century, the church had outgrown its hall again. The members renovated a derelict community centre. It reopened as The Well in 2001. Today, Bonny Downs Baptist Church still uses The Well for Sunday meetings.

In 1998, the church founded the Bonny Downs Community Association. Its mission is to transform the community. The church and the association work together. They deliver services that meet local needs.

The old church hall on Darwell Close continues to serve. It hosts ministry projects like a foodbank and night shelter. After a century of use, the building needs repair. Bonny Downs Baptist Church is raising funds to refurbish the site. They want to create a building for future generations.

Bonny Downs Baptist Church is an inclusive community. It welcomes all people regardless of background. They embrace those of any economic power, gender or mental health. It does not discriminate based on physical ability, race or sexuality.

The church also has a vision for the future. They plan to rebuild their old church site as an Urban Abbey. This will combine social housing and worship space. It will be a base for their community work. The church hosts Songs of Praise. They also have an annual summer camp. Bonny Downs Baptist Church shows radical faith and remarkable community spirit. They gave what they could and they used what they had.
