Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Marseille, nestled within the 14th arrondissement, lies the intriguing quartier of Bon-Secours. Bon-Secours is more than just a name on a map. It’s a story waiting to be unfolded. A story of faith, industry, and community, woven into the very fabric of Marseille. Bon-Secours began as a humble plea for spiritual solace. In 1638, Antoine Fabre and Philippe Lumidy, yearning for a place of worship closer to their homes, envisioned a small chapel. Their wish was granted by Madame de Ricard, who offered land “for the good of their souls and their families.” This simple act of generosity marked the birth of both Notre-Dame de Bon Secours and the quartier itself. The chapel, initially dedicated to the Visitation, grew over time, becoming a beacon of faith for the scattered community. Bon-Secours, interestingly, managed to escape the destructive wrath of the French Revolution due to its status as private property. A sanctuary preserved amidst the storm. As Marseille surged into the 19th century, the winds of change swept through Bon-Secours. The once-dominant rural economy, known for its delightful “Lou boun mieou” honey, began to fade. Factories rose, transforming the landscape and the lives of the inhabitants. During this period, the name Saint-Gabriel, linked to a local landowner, became an unofficial moniker for the area. A reminder of the personal histories interwoven with the quartier’s identity. In the early 20th century, a new chapter unfolded with the construction of the Eglise Sainte-Sophie Barat between 1931 and 1934. Named after a Marseille-born saint canonized in 1925, the church solidified the quartier’s connection to faith and its evolving community. Today, Bon-Secours stands as a testament to the enduring power of human spirit. From its humble beginnings as a small chapel, it has blossomed into a vibrant neighborhood. It’s a place where echoes of the past resonate in the present, where the hum of industry mingles with the whispers of prayer, and where the name Bon-Secours continues to hold a special meaning for the people of Marseille.
