Perhaps you have heard a story of a mechanic who dreamed of building a vehicle that could float on snow. That mechanic was Joseph-Armand Bombardier. Right here we are at Bombardier Aerospace. It is a company rooted in innovation.

Bombardier’s story began in 1942. Joseph-Armand Bombardier founded L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée in Valcourt. Initially, Bombardier manufactured vehicles for military use. After World War II, the company shifted to large snow vehicles for public transport and emergency services. In 1959, Bombardier introduced the Ski-Doo snowmobile, which became a commercial success.

Over the years, Bombardier grew. In 1978, the company adopted its present name. It entered the aerospace field in 1986. Bombardier’s growth came from acquiring failing government-owned companies at low prices and turning them around. By the late 1980s, Bombardier had become North America’s top railway vehicle producer. It was also Canada’s leading aerospace manufacturer and the world’s biggest snowmobile maker.

Bombardier’s aerospace segment designs, manufactures, and supports regional airliners, business jets, and utility aircraft. They fabricate airframe components. They provide defense products and services. Notable products include the Canadair Regional Jet, the Learjet line of business jets, and the Bombardier Global Express business jets.

In rail transportation, Bombardier designs and sells subway cars, light rail vehicles, and high-speed intercity cars. They also produce automated railroad cars and urban rapid transit systems.

Bombardier’s key people include Éric Martel. He is the President, Director, and Chief Executive Officer. Pierre Beaudoin is the Chairman.

Bombardier faced challenges, especially with the CSeries aircraft. This pushed the company into debt. As a result, Bombardier sold nearly all its operations except business jet manufacturing.

Today, Bombardier focuses on business jets. They manufacture the Global and Challenger series. In 2023, Bombardier delivered 138 business jets, making it the number one manufacturer globally. On May 18, 2021, the Global 7500/8000 series broke the sound barrier during testing. It became the fastest civil aircraft since the Concorde.

Bombardier has a rich history of diversification and innovation. From snowmobiles to trains and aircraft, Bombardier has left its mark. Its headquarters remain in Montreal. Bombardier continues to be a key player in the aerospace industry. As of December 31, 2023, Bombardier had 18,100 employees. The company’s revenue was US$8.046 billion.

Now, think about Bombardier’s journey. From a snowmobile innovator to a global aerospace leader, Bombardier’s story is one of resilience and adaptation.
