Curiosity stirred within a young Hiram Boaz as he envisioned a grand Methodist university in North Texas. Here at Boaz Commons at Southern Methodist University, we see the fruits of his ambition. Boaz Commons serves as a welcoming hub for first-year commuters and transfer students. It embodies the spirit of community that Hiram Boaz championed. This wasn’t always his namesake though. Originally, he envisioned Southwestern University, his alma mater, moving to Fort Worth. He even offered to secure land for the relocation! This bold idea met with resistance from Georgetown residents and Southwestern University affiliates. Undeterred, Boaz’s vision helped spark the proposal for a new institution in Dallas. That institution became Southern Methodist University, opening its doors in 1915. Though not the first president, Boaz played a crucial role. As the first vice-president, he spearheaded fundraising efforts, securing over $750,000. Later, he served as SMU’s second president, further solidifying the university’s financial foundation. Even in retirement, his dedication continued, raising millions more and establishing the SMU Sustentation Fund. Today, Boaz Commons stands as a tribute to this tireless advocate for education. It represents the inclusive community he envisioned, where students from all backgrounds find their place. It’s a place of connection, echoing the connections Hiram Boaz forged throughout his life.
