Here in Vaduz, a unique sculpture stands as a testament to linguistic diversity. It is the “Blühende Sprache” installation. This artwork celebrates the beauty and importance of sign language.

The “Blühende Sprache” found its new home in March 2023. You can now find it in the nature park. It is near the pond at Gerberweg and Solarisweg. Before that, it stood on Peter-Kaiser-Platz.

The sculpture’s journey began with a heartfelt wish. The Liechtenstein Association of the Deaf wanted sign language to be recognized. They wanted it to be a visible part of society. This wish turned into reality.

In 2020, the association presented the idea for a sculpture. It was meant to highlight sign language. The Liechtenstein Power Plants supported the project financially.

Peter Hemmi, a deaf artist from Switzerland, designed the sculpture. His goal was to represent sign language in an artistic way. The name “Blühende Sprache” translates to “Flourishing Language”. It symbolizes a love declaration to sign language.

The location of the sculpture was carefully considered. Several spots were considered. The Peter-Kaiser-Platz was finally selected. It was the most visible location.

The sculpture itself is impressive. A 3.5-meter-high iron pipe forms the base. Fifteen pairs of hands are cut out and re-welded onto the pipe. These hands symbolize communication in sign language. At night, LED lights illuminate the sculpture. They showcase the vibrancy of sign language.

The unveiling ceremony was held on September 16, 2021. Despite the rain, the event was a success. Children performed a sign language presentation. Politicians spoke about the importance of sign language. Dr. Joseph Murray, President of the World Federation of the Deaf, attended the event.

Murray emphasized the need for recognition of sign language. He said that deaf people should have access to their mother tongue. He praised Liechtenstein for taking steps towards this recognition.

Peter Hemmi shared his personal story. He spoke about the times when sign language was forbidden. He expressed his joy. He said that sign language is now visible in Vaduz.

The “Blühende Sprache” serves as a reminder. It reminds us of the importance of inclusion. It promotes an understanding. It makes us have an appreciation for different languages. It encourages us to embrace cultural diversity within our community. The sculpture is more than just a work of art. It represents a powerful message of acceptance.

The sculpture promotes recognition for all. It is a symbol of hope. It is located in the heart of Vaduz. It speaks volumes about Liechtenstein’s commitment to inclusivity. It is a testament to the beauty and vitality of sign language.
