For over a century the Blue Raiders have dominated the athletic fields of Middle Tennessee State University. From the gridiron to the diamond their presence is undeniable. Their name itself carries weight. It’s a testament to unwavering determination and fierce competition. A contest in 1934 gave birth to the iconic name. Before that teams were called Normalites Teachers and Pedagogues.
The Blue Raiders baseball team boasts 16 conference titles. They have played at Reese Smith Jr. Field a premier location in Conference USA. For 37 seasons they were coached by just two men. One of them Steve Peterson left an indelible mark. He led fundraising efforts for renovations. He oversaw the creation of the Stephen B Smith clubhouse. He also preserved annual events like the Fish Fry and Groundhog Day Luncheon.
The Blue Raiders men’s basketball team experienced their own moments of glory. Their first NCAA tournament win came in 1985. They defeated Kentucky a major upset. They even broke their own single season wins record in the 2011-12 season.
And then there’s the women’s basketball team. Their success is equally impressive. Multiple conference championships highlight their dominance. In recent years their winning streak reached incredible heights. They even held the record for the longest home winning streak in the NCAA.
