Nestled within the bustling heart of the National University of Singapore stands Block E4. This isn’t just another building. Block E4 is a testament to innovation, a vibrant hub within the largest of NUS’s fourteen faculties and schools: the Faculty of Engineering. Imagine nearly 10,000 students moving through this area, a far cry from the mere 300 students the faculty hosted in the late 1970s. Block E4 is an eight-story structure, a significant presence between Kent Ridge Crescent and Engineering Drive 2. Its elongated design stretches across the hilly campus terrain. Multiple covered walkways connect it to neighboring engineering facilities, weaving Block E4 into the fabric of the campus. This building underwent a significant retrofitting. The project focused on bringing Block E4 up to code with the latest fire safety regulations and building control standards. This involved adding features like a fire sprinkler system, a fire suppression system, escape staircases, a fireman’s lift, accessibility features for the disabled, and updated restrooms. The renovation didn’t stop at safety. Sustainability was a key focus. The building now boasts new facades with faceted aluminum screens. These screens serve multiple purposes. They provide better shading, improve thermal insulation, and give Block E4 a distinctive visual identity. They also shield the naturally ventilated corridors from rain and conceal the previously exposed services along the exterior walls. This commitment to sustainable design earned Block E4 the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award in 2015.
