Perhaps, standing before the Blessed Sacrament Church, you’re wondering about its story. This isn’t just another church. It’s a testament to faith and resilience.

The Blessed Sacrament Church is part of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of St. George’s-in-Grenada. The diocese was created in 1956.

The original church was completed in 1804. It was a small, low church with a spire dedicated to St. James. In 1840, a new church construction began. It was completed in 1848. It was dedicated again to St. James.

The style is Gothic Revival. You can see it in the pointed arch windows and doors. Look at the high ceiling and large buttresses. In 1901, the English Dominicans took charge. They added two chapels. One was Our Lady’s Chapel. The other was the Chapel of St. Joseph. Later, Bishop Justin Field added the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. He was the first Bishop of the Diocese.

The tower dates back to 1818. It was incorporated from the original church. It stands approximately 100 feet tall. It houses the bells and the original church clock. The clock chimes every fifteen minutes and on the hour.

The Cathedral has a rich history. A Christian presence in Grenada dates back to the mid-17th century. French settlers arrived from Martinique. The first Catholic Mass was celebrated in St. George’s in 1650.

Father Du Tertre wrote about a little church in 1656. It was built of reeds and palms. It was in the charge of Father Bresson. A colony of 300 people was located on the lagoon.

Later, the French moved to higher ground. They built a new church where the Anglican Church now stands. Father Labat described it as not large, beautiful, well built, or clean in 1700.

In 1763, France ceded Grenada to England. The Anglican Church became established. However, Catholics enjoyed more rights in Grenada than in England.

In 1773, the Catholic Church in St. George’s was made almost new again. This was due to the care and contributions of its priest and parishioners. The French retook the island between 1779 and 1783. When British rule returned, Catholics did not have all their previous rights. They abandoned their church and used the presbytery as their chapel.

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral was damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The entire roof was lost. Only the belfry remained intact. SRM Architects of Barbados were commissioned to do the work. They first had to undertake a measured survey. This was to draw a plan of the existing footprint. No floor plans existed. The balcony was restored. The ground floor layout was revised. Columns were added to provide an uninterrupted view of the pulpit.

Today, the Blessed Sacrament Church stands as a symbol of faith. It is a testament to the community’s resilience. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Remember the people who built and rebuilt it. Consider their enduring spirit. The Blessed Sacrament Church is more than just a building. It’s a living story.
