On a crisp spring day in 1901, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish took root in the heart of Oak Cliff. Bishop Edward Joseph Dunne established this vibrant community. He appointed Father J. L. Campbell as its first pastor. The original church stood proudly at the corner of 12th Street and Grand Street, later renamed Marsalis Avenue. Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a cornerstone of the community. In late 1901, the parish opened Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy. The Sisters of St. Mary of Namur nurtured young minds within its walls. This commitment to education continued into the 1960s. The school was renamed Bishop Dunne Catholic School. It relocated to Rugged Drive. Yet, its legacy as a strong Catholic institution remains. Today, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish thrives with over 3,500 parishioners. They gather to celebrate their faith and connect with each other. The parish bustles with activity, from catechism classes with 1,222 children to numerous volunteer groups. The energy is palpable. Various pastoral groups enrich the community. The prayer group, Legion of Mary, Divine Providence, Divine Mercy, pro-life group, Arco Iris, and youth group all contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Blessed Sacrament. Their work strengthens the faith of the entire community. The current pastor, Father Figueroa, embodies the parish’s spirit. He believes that Christian love is evident in their devotion to God and others. Though some may perceive Blessed Sacrament as a “poor, Hispanic parish,” it is rich in spirit. The sounds of joyful hymns fill the air during Mass. The community celebrates life’s milestones. Marriages, baptisms, and confirmations all find a home within these walls. Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish is more than just a building. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It’s a place where love binds together the people of Oak Cliff.
