Whispers of a bygone era still echo around the Blechburg. Here on the edge of the Jägerberg in Radebeul, the skeletal remains of a once proud tower stand sentinel. The Blechburg, as it’s known, began not as a fortress, but as a refuge from a sudden storm. In 1844, August Traugott Hantzsch, a wine merchant who owned the Jägerberg estate, found himself caught in a downpour. He commissioned the architect Woldemar Hermann to design a “Gothic style” tower. It served as both a viewing point and a shelter. The Blechburg rose 17 meters, an octagonal structure of granite blocks topped with a crenellated crown. The ground floor held storage. Above, a wooden-vaulted main room boasted five pointed sandstone windows, accessible only by an external staircase. A slender turret with a pointed roof led to the viewing platform. From there, an adjacent bastion offered a panoramic view. An 1844 painting even depicts the Frauenkirche in Dresden visible from this spot. Sadly, today the view is obscured by overgrown trees. In 1895, Friedrich Eduard Bilz, a naturopath, acquired the Blechburg along with Haus Jägerberg. He incorporated the tower into the network of paths he created for patients at his Bilz Sanatorium. Sadly, the Blechburg met a fiery end in 1944, torched by Hitler Youth. Today, only the ruined outer walls and the first step of the external staircase remain. They serve as a poignant reminder of the Blechburg’s brief reign as a beloved landmark.
