Gazing up at these vibrant azure structures, one might wonder about the story behind the Blaue Röhren Sculpture. The Blaue Röhren, or “Blue Tubes” Sculpture, is a three-part, large-scale work located in the Hockgraben valley. This striking sculpture, crafted from glass-fiber reinforced polyester, sheet steel, and vibrant paint, was created by Friedrich Gräsel. It was installed in 1974, nestled between the University of Konstanz campus and the city itself. These monumental blue tubes, each 6 meters long and 2 meters in diameter, are more than just eye-catching. They form a 600-meter line connecting the university with the Sonnenbühl residential area. Think of it as an artistic bridge between academia and everyday life. The Blaue Röhren Sculpture is not one solid piece, but rather a series of three distinct stations. Starting near the student residences, you’ll first encounter a single, upright tube. A bit further along the path, the second station features a horizontal tube accompanied by three tube-shaped gates. Finally, the most complex station sits near the university. This station consists of three units spread across two islands within a small, man-made pond. These islands showcase a low gate, a T-shaped structure, and a powerful, compact cube. The cube is particularly intriguing. It’s formed from three distinct elements, intricately fitted together to fill nearly all the spaces of a three-part cubic grid structure. Walking the path from Sonnenbühl to the university, the Blaue Röhren Sculpture creates a crescendo effect. Each station becomes progressively more complex and expansive, culminating in the intricate structures of the final station. Friedrich Gräsel, the artist behind the Blaue Röhren, considered this sculpture to be his most significant work. He saw it as a symbol of knowledge, connecting the university with the homes of those who seek it.
