Bláthy Ottó Titusz was a significant figure in Hungarian history. He wasn’t just an engineer. He was an inventor a true visionary. His contributions to electrical engineering are monumental. This bust commemorates his genius. His legacy lives on in our modern world.
Bláthy’s story began in Tata in 1860. He studied in Tata and Vienna. In 1882 he graduated from the Vienna University of Technology. He became a mechanical engineer. His early work at the Ganz factory proved unfulfilling. However Zipernowsky’s growing success piqued his interest. He joined Ganz in 1883 as a mechanical draftsman. Bláthy’s formal education lacked depth in electrotechnics. Yet he independently delved into the theoretical underpinnings of electricity. He studied magnetic circuits. He developed a practical method for calculating magnetic circuits. This was a world first. Gisbert Kapp and John Hopkinson later published similar research but years later.
Bláthy’s understanding of magnetic circuits was crucial. It was vital for developing the transformer. In 1883 he modified the factory’s direct current machines. This increased their efficiency. He also identified the principles of heat dissipation in electrical machines. Others only understood the correlation between current strength and heating. Bláthy stated that a conductor’s or machine’s heating depends on the watts per unit surface area. This is groundbreaking.
His talent didn’t go unnoticed. Zipernowsky recognized Bláthy’s potential. Bláthy represented Ganz at the 1884 Turin Italian National Exhibition. There he encountered Gaulard and Gibbs’ alternating current system. Bláthy immediately recognized its flaws. He reported them to Zipernowsky. Together with Déri they improved the system. They developed the closed-core transformer. This invention was presented at the 1885 Budapest National Exhibition. This was a world-changing invention.
Following smaller adjustments based on Galileo Ferraris’ opinion. They received a commission for Rome’s first large-scale power plant. It was commissioned in October 1886. The plant used the waterfalls near Tivoli. The Ganz company built it. The plant’s generators operated at 5000 V. They were connected in parallel. They were also connected to the old Roman power plant via high-voltage transmission lines. Another first for the world.
Bláthy’s inventions extended far beyond the transformer. He invented the electricity meter and the three-phase generator. He held 96 patents by 1886. He also collaborated with Neustadt Lipót. His induction electricity meter was launched in 1889. Its internal structure remains largely unchanged to this day. His design for water turbine generators won a prize at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition. His four-pole rotating part design was bought by Swiss BBC and Berlin SSW.
After Kandó Kálmán’s death in 1931 Bláthy completed the phase-switching mechanism for Kandó locomotives. It was a tremendously complex piece of engineering and crucial to the success of the locomotives. Bláthy possessed exceptional abilities. He was a prodigious mental calculator and had an unparalleled memory. He was vice-president of the Hungarian Automobile Club. He was also a member of the automobile racing committee. He was a passionate dog lover and breeder. He remained the intellectual leader of the Ganz factory until his death in 1939.
