What if these walls could talk? They’d whisper tales spanning two centuries, for Blackheath Prep, formerly Christ’s College, has witnessed it all. Right here, in 1823, Reverend W. Greenlaw envisioned a haven for young minds. He founded a Christian boys’ boarding school, and Blackheath Prep stands as a testament to his vision. Imagine boys, sons of servicemen and professionals from far-flung corners of the British Empire, filling these halls with laughter and learning. The school thrived, becoming a charitable trust in the 1950s, but change was afoot. By the 1990s, a new chapter began to unfold. A co-educational nursery and pre-prep blossomed, breathing new life into the grounds. The demand for the nursery soared, while the boarding school slowly faded into the annals of history. Christ’s College closed its doors in 1998, after 175 years of educating young boys. Yet, from the ashes of the old, Blackheath Prep emerged. The school embraced its new identity, adding modern facilities while preserving its heritage. The original chapel, once echoing with hymns and prayers, transformed into a tranquil library. Blackheath Prep stands today, a blend of the old and the new, a testament to the enduring power of education and adaptation.
