“A park named after a school principal?” you ask. Indeed. We are standing at Bixler Park. This 1.01-acre recreational spot in Hyde Park has a unique story.

Let’s step back in time. In 1880, the South Park Commissioners acquired this land from Cook County. For many years, it changed hands. In 1946, the Chicago Park District gave the land to the Board of Education. By 1950, the city operated it as a playground, under the Board of Education. Then, in 1957, the city gave the site’s management to the Chicago Park District.

The park expanded in 1963. This happened when a portion of S. Kenwood Avenue was vacated. The Park District leased the property until 1991. That year, the Board of Education finally transferred the property to the Park District. It had found its permanent home.

But here’s the interesting part. In 1950, the city honored a man named Ray Bixler. He was a Chicago educator. Bixler served as a school principal for many years. Born in 1890, he died in 1947.

Bixler’s career began in 1925. He taught chemistry and science at Harper, Hirsch, and Tilden High Schools. Before that, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. In 1931, he became principal of Barnard High School. Four years later, he became principal of Ray School. He served there until his death.

So, Bixler Park is more than just a playground. It’s a tribute to a dedicated educator. Ray Bixler shaped young minds. He left a lasting impact on Chicago’s school system.

Today, Bixler Park offers a playground. It features swings, slides, and climbing equipment. There is even a spray feature for hot days. The park is a popular destination for families. Its engineered wood fiber surface ensures safety. It’s a place where kids can play and have fun.

Think about Ray Bixler’s legacy as children laugh and play here. This park is a living memorial to his commitment to education. Bixler Park connects the past and present. It provides a space for recreation and reflection.
