Question: What if stones could tell tales of unity and remembrance? That’s precisely what the Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau does. This tower stands tall. It represents a chapter in German history.

The Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau is more than just a stone structure. It is a symbol of a united nation. It honors Otto von Bismarck. He was a prominent figure in German history. This monument serves as a reminder of the past.

Let’s step back to the late 19th century. The idea of building a Bismarck tower gained momentum. Dedicated citizens wanted to honor the former Chancellor. In 1900, the “Verein zur Errichtung einer Bismarcksäule auf dem Pariner Berg” was founded. This translates to “Association for the Construction of a Bismarck Tower on the Pariner Mountain.” The goal was clear. They would erect a Bismarck tower. It would stand on the highest elevation in the area using public donations.

Ernst Theodor Lampe played a vital role. He was an innkeeper from Pariner Berg. Lampe provided the building site for free. It was valued at 3,000 Mark. He also donated 1,000 Mark. Lampe also offered fieldstones from his land. These stones would become the tower’s foundation.

Designed by architect Eduard Gildemeister from Bremen, the Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau took shape. Gustav Menschel was the building contractor. Karl Steen from Pansdorf handled the stonework. Maurer Dabelsteen from Ratekau worked on the bricklaying. Construction started in November 1901. Local granite stones formed the exterior. Pieces from Sweden completed the fire bowl crown.

The Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau has a square layout. It stands on a terrace. This terrace measures 13.40 meters by 13.40 meters. The tower itself is 12.82 meters high. Six stone steps lead to the terrace. Four pillars frame the entrance. Inside, a 38-step spiral staircase leads to the observation platform.

The tower’s dedication occurred on September 28, 1902. Over 1,000 people gathered. They came from the Principality of Lübeck, Eutin, and Lübeck itself. Festivities included speeches by Pastor Zeidler and Judge von Heimburg. A Bismarck fire was lit at 6:30 p.m. It burned until 10:00 p.m.

The Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau has seen its share of history. During World War II, it served as an anti-aircraft command post. In 1945, released French prisoners damaged parts of the tower. By 1958, safety concerns led to its closure.

In 1960, the city of Bad Schwartau took ownership. Renovations followed. The Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau reopened in 1972. In 1980, it gained protected monument status. Recent restoration work concluded in 2021. The Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau was officially reopened.

Today, the Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau is open year-round. From the top you can see Lübeck, Neustadt, the Bay of Lübeck, the Hemmelsdorfer See and the hills of the Holstein Switzerland. The family Knees runs the restaurant “Pariner Berg” at the foot of the tower. Their connection dates back to the tower’s beginnings. They donated land and materials for its construction. The Bismarcksäule Bad Schwartau stands as a testament to history.
