In 1992 Catherine Myers transformed Bishop Challoner Girls’ School. Bishop Challoner Catholic School wasn’t always co-educational. It started as a girls’ school. The school’s history stretches back over a century. It’s been in several locations within the E1 postcode. The original Convent of Mercy opened in 1859. A junior mixed school started in 1933 in Lucas Street. World War II heavily impacted the school. The Lucas Street school became a rest centre. It was destroyed in 1945. Bishop Challoner Girls’ School relocated to Redmans Road. The boys’ school was in Johnson Street. In 1956 the school moved to Christian Street. By 1969 Sister Mary Joseph Cleary retired. The school had grown to 15 forms with 450 students. In 1975 a new building opened on Lukin Street. Cardinal John Heenan blessed the new premises. In 1991 the Archdiocese of Westminster took over. Catherine Myers became the school’s first lay headteacher. In 1994 boys were admitted to the sixth form. New technology and business areas were upgraded. A new sixth form building opened. Cardinal GB Hume did the honours. The Christian Street building closed in 1997. The school moved to a new teaching block on Hardinge Street. Cardinal GB Hume opened the new facilities in 1999. Bishop Challoner became the country’s first federated school in 2001. A boys’ school opened in the Shadwell Centre. Teachers walked between the Shadwell Centre and Lukin Street. A £47 million redevelopment began in 2006. A temporary building was erected near the Lukin Street school. The first new buildings opened in 2007. The sports hall theatre and dance studio were built first. The boys’ school moved into the new buildings in 2009. In 2010 Cardinal Nichols dedicated the completed school. A special mass was composed for the occasion. Bishop Challoner Catholic School continues its rich legacy in East London. It stands as a testament to dedication. The school is a symbol of educational excellence and community spirit. Today Bishop Challoner Catholic School serves a diverse student population. The school offers GCSEs BTECs A Levels and further BTECs. It’s a truly remarkable institution.
