Imagine the constant hum of activity. This is Bishan Depot. It is not just a place but a vital organ in Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit system. Completed in 1987, Bishan Depot stands as a testament to Singapore’s commitment to efficient and reliable public transportation.
Bishan Depot is located between Ang Mo Kio and Bishan stations on the North South line. This location is strategic. It allows for easy access and quick deployment of trains. Bishan Depot has three reception tracks, two northbound towards Ang Mo Kio station and one southbound towards Bishan station.
Did you know that Bishan Depot is vast? Its storage yard has a capacity of 59 trains. The entire area spans 300,000 square meters. That’s roughly the size of 42 football fields.
Bishan Depot houses central maintenance facilities. These facilities are crucial for train overhauls. It also ensures the smooth operation of trains on the North South Line. Before the Tuas Depot opened, Bishan Depot handled maintenance for the East West Line.
But Bishan Depot is more than just a maintenance hub. It is also a training center. Newly recruited staff learn the ropes here. The faregate operation department is also located within its grounds.
Back in 1984, Nishimatsu-Lum Chang Joint Venture won the contract to build Bishan Depot. The construction was a massive undertaking. It solidified Bishan Depot’s role as a cornerstone of Singapore’s MRT network.
In 2011, Bishan Depot faced an unexpected challenge. A C751B MRT train was vandalized. This security breach led to a fine for SMRT. The incident highlighted the need for constant vigilance and robust security measures.
More recently, SMRT announced the Bishan Depot Upgrading Project in December 2023. This initiative aims to transform Bishan Depot into a model heavy maintenance facility. Advanced automation and integrated digital solutions will be key. The goal is to boost maintenance efficiencies and increase productivity.
The BSD Upgrading Project involves collaboration between SMRT, the Land Transport Authority, and CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co. Leveraging CRRC Sifang’s expertise, SMRT plans to double its train overhaul capacity. Ergonomic solutions will also enhance workplace safety.
Bishan Depot stands as a symbol of Singapore’s dedication to progress. It ensures the smooth operation of the MRT system. So, the next time you ride the MRT, remember the unsung hero. Remember Bishan Depot, working tirelessly behind the scenes.
