Did you know Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park wasn’t always this stunning? This vibrant green space nestled in the heart of Singapore has a fascinating history. Originally known as Bishan Park it opened in 1988. It served as a vital green buffer between Ang Mo Kio and Bishan New Towns. The park was envisioned as a leisure spot for everyone from children to nature lovers. It boasted facilities like a football field a floating amphitheatre and a natural pond. Construction wasn’t easy though. People used the unfinished park before it was even complete making the building process challenging.
But the story of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park doesn’t end there. In 2006 Singapore launched its Active Beautiful Clean Waters ABC Waters Programme. This ambitious project aimed to transform water bodies into beautiful recreational spaces. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park was chosen as a flagship project. The Kallang River which ran through the park as a concrete channel was slated for a major upgrade.
The redevelopment of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park was a huge undertaking. The PUB and NParks collaborated with Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl and CH2M Hill. They held numerous workshops and on-site tours to integrate the river and park seamlessly. The design process was innovative. Soil bioengineering techniques new to Singapore were tested and implemented. This involved using plants and rocks to stabilize the river banks. It was an exciting time for landscape architecture and engineering in Singapore.
The cost of the transformation was significant. The project cost a total of 76 million SGD. But the results were spectacular. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially opened the redeveloped Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in March 2012. The park was renamed to reflect its encompassing location.
Today Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is a beloved community hub. It’s a space where people gather for exercise yoga or simply to enjoy the beauty of nature. The naturalized river meanders through the park creating a tranquil and picturesque landscape. The park even has a family of otters a popular attraction for visitors. The park truly offers something for everyone. It demonstrates how careful planning and collaboration can transform a utilitarian space into a thriving community asset. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to green spaces and sustainable urban design. It’s a story of transformation beauty and community.
