Did a bend in the Main give Bischofsheim its name? Some say “bieschen,” meaning “to bend,” refers to the river’s curve here. Others claim the name honors a bishop. Here in Bischofsheim, the whispers of both theories linger. Bischofsheim’s story begins in the 11th century, recorded as “Bissescheim circa menum,” meaning “Bissescheim near the Main.” Its location within the “Megunzer Mark” (Mainz Mark) around 1200 solidified its ties to Mainz. For a significant period, Bischofsheim was actually divided, ruled by two lords. This unusual arrangement even led to two separate Schultheiße, or village heads. In 1579, Landgrave Georg I of Hesse unified Bischofsheim under Hessian rule. This marked the end of 248 years of divided governance. Peace was short-lived. The Thirty Years’ War ravaged Bischofsheim, decimating its population. But the town persevered. A new town hall, now a museum, symbolized its resilience. Bischofsheim’s fate took another turn in 1930. It became a district of Mainz, a status it held until the end of World War II. The war brought devastating air raids due to Bischofsheim’s crucial rail hub, “Mainz-Bischofsheim.” The post-war division of Germany further complicated matters. Bischofsheim, on the Rhine’s right bank, was separated from Mainz and once again became an independent municipality within the Groß-Gerau district. Today, the train station still bears the name “Mainz-Bischofsheim.” This reminds us of its connected past. From a farming village, Bischofsheim transformed into a bustling railway town. The railway brought workers and their families, changing Bischofsheim’s character forever. The influx of railway workers, many from across Germany, led to housing shortages and innovative construction. One striking example is the “Jerusalem” settlement. Its flat roofs, unusual for the time, reminded residents of the Middle East. Bischofsheim now blends rural charm with a multicultural vibrancy. Its history, from divided village to railway hub and back to independent municipality, is etched into its streets and buildings. You can discover more of Bischofsheim’s story on seven information panels throughout the town. These panels, titled “Bischofsheim – der Ortsdamm im Wandel der Zeiten” (Bischofsheim – The Village Dam Through the Ages), trace its development and the importance of the flood protection dam. They offer a glimpse into the past, bringing Bischofsheim’s fascinating journey to life.
