Gazing upon Birlik Camii, one can almost hear the echoes of its near abandonment. This grand mosque, one of the largest on Istanbul’s Anatolian side, almost didn’t happen. Birlik Camii’s construction began in 1991, fueled by the generosity of benefactors. However, insufficient funds stalled the project, leaving it incomplete for years. The mosque stood silent, a testament to unrealized dreams. Then, in a twist of fate, Üsküdar Mayor Mustafa Kara intervened. He ordered the project’s resumption. Within eight months, Birlik Camii was finally completed, a symbol of resilience and community. The mosque’s interior boasts stunning craftsmanship. The mihrap, minbar, kürsü, and müezzin mahfili are all crafted from Marmara marble. Gold leaf adorns the decorations, complemented by exquisite Kütahya tiles. A modern carbon heating system ensures comfort, while the lead-covered dome gleams above. Did you know that the dome alone required 110 tons of lead? The exterior is no less impressive, clad in Taraklı mosaic. Birlik Camii is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the power of community, a place where hearts unite in prayer.
