In 1350, a small settlement nestled along the Elbe River first appeared in records as “Birkwicz.” This, my friends, is Birkwitz. It’s now a charming district of Pirna, but its story stretches back through centuries. Birkwitz rests in the Elbe Valley, right on the river’s right bank. This location has shaped its destiny, connecting it to the bustling city of Dresden just a short distance north. Originally, Birkwitz was a “Rundweiler,” a circular village. Over time, it expanded beyond its original core. Imagine the village growing organically, houses and farmsteads spreading outwards like ripples in a pond. By 1900, the land surrounding Birkwitz covered almost 269 hectares. Life in Birkwitz wasn’t always peaceful. The villagers were once obligated to pay dues to the parish and hospital of Dohna. Later, the owners of the Schönfeld estate held power, impacting the lives of Birkwitz’s residents. Through changing administrations, from the Amt Dresden to the Gerichtsamt Pirna, Birkwitz remained resilient. It even achieved independence as a municipality in 1838. Birkwitz wasn’t alone in its journey. In 1973, it merged with its neighbor Pratzschwitz to form a new community. This union eventually became part of Pirna in 1999. Birkwitz has seen its population fluctuate over the years. From a small settlement of a few dozen in the 16th century, it grew to over 750 inhabitants by the mid-20th century. So as you stand here in modern Birkwitz, take a moment to picture its humble beginnings. Imagine the farmers tilling the fields, the families gathered around the hearth. Remember the changing tides of power and the eventual union with Pratzschwitz. Birkwitz is more than just a district of Pirna. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a small community, shaped by the river and the passage of time.
