BioZentrum I

Completed in 2018, BioZentrum I at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is a hub of biological research. This striking four-story building houses cutting-edge laboratories, seminar rooms, student workspaces, and offices. BioZentrum I isn’t primarily a teaching building. It’s a research powerhouse. Eleven professors and 195 staff members delve into protein biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and animal studies within these walls. The building’s design fosters communication and flexibility. The layout includes distinct laboratory clusters and adaptable modules. The bright, central atrium connects all floors, acting as a meeting point for biologists. BioZentrum I also has specialized facilities. A lower ground floor houses insects, fish, frogs, and reptiles, supporting the diverse research conducted here. The building also has three technical control rooms, two on the roof and one in the lower ground floor. BioZentrum I is more than just a research facility. It’s a testament to the innovative spirit of JGU Mainz. The university awarded the construction contract based on a functional description of services. This approach highlights their focus on practicality and efficiency. This approach allowed Implenia, in a joint venture with Wolfferts Gebäudetechnik, to provide comprehensive services. They handled everything from planning and building permits to technical design and execution. The total project value reached around 29 million euros. The connection to the Botanical Garden adds to the ambiance, creating a stimulating environment. BioZentrum I represents JGU Mainz’s commitment to advancing biological research.
