Why did Friedrich Eduard Bilz adorn the Bilzmuseum with colorful roof tiles? Here at the entrance to the Bilz-Bad, this small building with its eye-catching roof stands as a testament to Bilz’s legacy. A bust of Bilz greets visitors, his distinctive head a familiar sight. Behind the bust, an inscription speaks of the thousands of pores in our skin, waiting to absorb light. The Bilzmuseum itself consists of two rooms. The first room displays an old bathing regulation, complete with original bathing attire. It also showcases detailed sketches of the Undosa wave machine. Bilz purchased this machine after seeing it at the 1905 Hygiene Exhibition in Dresden. He then installed it in the Bilz-Bad grounds in 1912. A 1:80 scale model of the Undosa machine, crafted by a hobbyist named Pietsch, sits nearby. Display cases hold artifacts from the sanatorium, including a wash set, cutlery, and even Bilz’s own hat, complete with bow tie and glasses. The second room of the Bilzmuseum delves deeper into Bilz’s world. Large panels on the walls explore various themes: “The Bilz-Bad,” “The Life of F. E. Bilz,” “The Bilz Book,” “The Sanatorium,” “Daily Life at the Sanatorium,” and “F. E. Bilz as a Life Reformer.” Display cases in this room contain open Bilz books. They show detailed illustrations of internal organs and home medical devices, like the high-voltage irradiation devices once common in many households. A steam device for treating painful joints is on loan. There are also exhibits about a legal dispute over the indecency of encountering “naked people on the way to the Bilz plot”. You can also see displays about various attempts to copy Bilz-Sinalco. A large travel chest speaks to Bilz’s wanderlust, even in his later years, traveling the world without his wife Auguste. A visit to the Bilzmuseum could conclude with a gentle vibration massage and an entry in the guestbook. A final thought: remember the colorful roof tiles? Perhaps they symbolize the vibrancy of Bilz’s natural healing methods, a vibrant splash of color in the world of health.
