It was a “super pit,” a symbol of Scotland’s industrial heart. Bilston Glen Colliery fed the nation’s hunger for coal from 1954 until its closure in 1989. The colliery was a vital part of Midlothian’s economy, employing over 2,300 miners at its peak in the 1970s. Imagine the constant hum of machinery, the rhythmic clang of pickaxes against coal, the shouts of men coordinating their efforts deep underground. Bilston Glen Colliery wasn’t just a hole in the ground. It was a network of shafts plunging 750 meters into the earth, connecting to a vast labyrinth of roadways. These roadways extended into existing workings, ensuring airflow and access to untapped coal seams. The main shaft, an impressive 7.3 meters in diameter, facilitated the transport of coal to the surface. Two ground-mounted AC winders, each with a power of 1082KW, hauled four 10.7-tonne skips. A second shaft, slightly smaller at 6.1 meters in diameter, allowed for the simultaneous transport of 72 men using double-decked cages. The colliery was a feat of engineering, designed to delve deeper into the Midlothian coalfield than any other mine. It was intended to extract one million tons of coal annually, a testament to the ambition of the National Coal Board. Bilston Glen Colliery even had a state-of-the-art coal preparation plant, a Baum-type washer capable of processing 640 tons of coal per hour. This colliery wasn’t just about brute force extraction. It was a carefully planned operation, designed by NCB architect Egon Riss. The complex included not just the industrial infrastructure, but also baths, a canteen, and medical facilities.
