Why is Billy Goat Hill called Billy Goat Hill? Well, imagine San Francisco in the late 1800s. Billy Goat Hill wasn’t a park then. It was a bustling quarry owned by the Gray Brothers. They were mining rock to build the very streets we walk on today. The name likely came from the goats that grazed on its steep slopes, a common sight back then. Billy Goat Hill offers breathtaking views of the Bay Bridge and downtown San Francisco. The climb to the top is a bit steep. But it’s worth it for the panorama that unfolds before you. In 1975, Billy Goat Hill officially became a city park. Today, it’s a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike. It’s a tranquil escape from the bustling city below. This small, 3.5-acre park boasts a network of trails. One of them, the Beacon Trail, connects Billy Goat Hill to the Walter Haas Playground. Billy Goat Hill has quite the colorful history. Remember those Gray Brothers who owned the quarry? They were notorious for their questionable practices. One incident ended with George Gray being shot dead by a disgruntled employee at the quarry site. The employee was later acquitted, to the cheers of the courtroom crowd. The quarry closed after this. Billy Goat Hill became a place for picnics and play. Then, in the 1950s, the area became part of a redevelopment project. Much of the surrounding landscape was transformed. But Billy Goat Hill, thanks to the efforts of local residents, remained a cherished open space. In 2009, neighbors revived the Friends of Billy Goat Hill group. They organized cleanups. They worked with the city to restore trails and improve the park’s habitat. Today, visitors to Billy Goat Hill can enjoy the fruits of their labor. They can marvel at the wildflowers and greenery. And they can take in the same stunning city views that have captivated people for generations.
