Perched high, Bilbjerg whispers tales of Aarhus’s transformation. Can you feel the wind? It carries stories from a Viking settlement to a modern metropolis. Aarhus began as a fortified Viking settlement in the 8th century. It was known as ‘Århus’ or ‘Åros’ meaning ‘The Mouth of the River’.

Bilbjerg offers a unique vantage point. Aarhus has a rich history and vibrant culture. It is the second-largest city in Denmark. It seamlessly blends tradition with innovation. In 2017, Aarhus was the European Capital of Culture.

Look toward the waterfront. Notice the modern development known as Aarhus Ø. It features stylish apartments and trendy restaurants. See if you can spot a unique building modeled after icebergs. That is Isbjerget.

Isbjerget was the first project completed on the former industrial port area. The Port of Aarhus moved to new facilities south of the city center. The building complex consists of four buildings. These buildings house 208 apartments. The apartments range from 55 m2 to 200 m2.

The buildings reach up to ten floors. The shortest building stands closest to the waterfront. The tallest is further back. Architects designed it after floating icebergs in the North Atlantic. The buildings display sharp triangular edges. They have shifting irregular facades. White terrazzo covers the buildings. Balconies are made of blue glass.

The Danish pension fund PensionDanmark funded Isbjerget. Four architectural firms designed it. They were CEBRA and JDS Architects from Denmark. Louis Paillard from France also contributed. Dutch SeARCH was the final contributor.
