Gazing across Big Muddy Creek, imagine the clash of thousands. Big Muddy Creek wasn’t always a place of tranquil beauty. It was once a battlefield. Around 1741, the creek became the site of a brutal conflict called Te-Rangi-hinganga-tahi. This translates to “The Day When All Fell Together”. This name grimly reflects the battle’s impact on Big Muddy Creek. The battle was fought between Ngāti Whātua and Waiohua. Kiwi Tāmaki, a Waiohua chief, sought revenge for attacks on settlements allied with his tribe. He assembled a massive force, thousands strong, and marched on Ngāti Whātua, who had gathered at Big Muddy Creek. Despite being significantly outnumbered, Ngāti Whātua, led by chiefs like Wahaakiaki, employed clever tactics. They feigned retreat, drawing the Waiohua forces deeper into the creek. The resulting battle was a devastating defeat for Kiwi Tāmaki. So many died that the creek, a vital source of shellfish for local Māori, became polluted with corpses. This tragic event is etched in the history of Big Muddy Creek. The battle’s name forever reminds us of the day when the waters ran red, and the tranquil creek became a scene of carnage. Today, Big Muddy Creek flows peacefully towards the Manukau Harbour. It’s hard to imagine the chaos that once unfolded here. The creek, now a place of natural beauty, holds a dark and compelling history.
