Cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London the same foundry that crafted the original in 1752 this impressive piece is one of only about 100 replicas made available across the US in 1976. It commemorates the nation’s bicentennial a truly momentous occasion.

The Bicentennial Liberty Bell Sculpture’s journey to Chicago wasn’t simple. Imagine the effort involved in raising the funds for its purchase and transportation. A group of dedicated Chicago residents likely worked tirelessly to bring this symbol of freedom to their community. This wasn’t just a simple transaction. It was a testament to their commitment to preserving history. Their dedication made this possible.

Think about the sheer weight of this bell. A two-ton marvel it needed a strong foundation. A special concrete base was poured to support it. To protect it from the elements a neoclassical pavilion was constructed. It’s a wonderful example of community spirit and civic pride.

Sadly the original pavilion eventually deteriorated. It was replaced with a smaller shelter. The shelter stands as a testament to ongoing efforts to care for this important piece. The bell itself remains unchanged a powerful symbol that continues to resonate.
