Tucked away in the heart of Istanbul’s Cibali district, Bıçakçı Alaattin Cami has witnessed centuries of change. This unassuming mosque holds a story as rich and layered as the city itself. Bıçakçı Alaattin Cami was commissioned by Bıçakçı Alaaddin Ali, a man whose name echoes through the mosque’s history. He built it in his own honor, shortly before his death in 1504. The mosque’s original walls, constructed of sturdy stone and brick, still stand as a testament to his vision. The single-balconied minaret, short and stout, watches over the neighborhood. Its unique cup-shaped design, made of brick, sets it apart from the slender spires of other mosques.

Bıçakçı Alaattin Cami has been lovingly restored several times. In 1868, İsmail Efendi spearheaded a renovation project. Later, in 1893, Hacı Şevki Efendi oversaw further repairs. These restorations have ensured that Bıçakçı Alaattin Cami continues to serve the community. Inside, the mosque is a serene space. The lower walls and the mihrab are adorned with marble. A women’s gallery overlooks the main prayer hall. A small courtyard leads to the entrance, creating a tranquil transition from the bustling streets outside. A small primary school once stood next to the mosque, but it was sadly demolished in 1930.

An inscription graces the wall facing the street. Another inscription, located on a fountain with running water, dates back to 1893. Bıçakçı Alaattin Cami continues to be a vibrant hub of worship, drawing 20 to 25 people for daily prayers and 60 to 70 for Friday prayers. The mosque’s history isn’t confined to its walls. The surrounding area, once part of the larger Alaeddin Mescid-Tekke complex, reveals glimpses of its past. Though the original buildings are gone, remnants of the boundary walls, the courtyard entrance, and a nearby fountain remain.
