Built by Fernand Pouillon, the Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles isn’t just a library. It’s a time machine. Imagine stepping back to 1958, the year this architectural marvel opened its doors. The Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles stands before you, a testament to Pouillon’s vision. It has earned a “20th Century Heritage” label from the French Ministry of Culture. This isn’t just about books. It’s about history, architecture, and the enduring spirit of learning. The Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles initially served the Faculty of Science. Over time, it has evolved into a vibrant hub for students from various disciplines, including Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Today, the Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles welcomes between 4,500 and 5,000 students to the Saint-Charles campus. Approximately 75% are Science students, while 25% pursue studies in Humanities and Social Sciences. But it’s not just for students. The library opens its doors to the public. In 2012 alone, the Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles recorded 212,474 entries. Imagine the stories within those walls. The Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles has undergone significant renovations. The first phase in 2007 saw the creation of a new welcome desk, a dedicated training room, and improved safety measures for the library’s collections. Even the roof was refurbished. An elevator was installed, connecting the ground floor to the lower ground floor, and accessible restrooms were added. The second phase of renovations in 2009 focused on modernizing the interior. New flooring, furniture, and signage were introduced. Comfortable spaces for cultural activities, leisure, and relaxation were created. The library’s collections were reorganized into thematic areas. Opening hours were extended, and in 2011, a brand-new multimedia space was unveiled. Today, the Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles boasts a state-of-the-art computer facility, Wi-Fi access, laptop loans, group study rooms, and resources for visually impaired users. It even offers photocopying, printing, and scanning services, along with bibliographical information and IT support. The digitized Flore du Docteur Poucel, a remarkable collection from the library’s heritage reserve, is now available online. From its classified heritage status to its modern amenities, the Bibliothèque universitaire Saint-Charles offers more than just books. It offers a journey through time, a space for discovery, and a connection to the vibrant pulse of Marseille.
