“Approximately 25200 monographs 17400 journal volumes and 180 current journals” That’s quite a collection isn’t it? Welcome to the BibliothekVor Fruehgesch Archäologie the library of the Department of Prehistoric and Early Historic Archaeology at the University of Bonn.

This isn’t just any library. It’s a treasure trove of knowledge a repository of history spanning millennia. Here within these walls you’ll find a wealth of information on European cultures from the earliest traces of humankind right up to the High Middle Ages. Think Stone Age Bronze Age Iron Age and beyond. This library holds the keys to understanding these eras.

But there’s more. This isn’t solely focused on Europe. Since the turn of the millennium a focus on Eurasian nomadic cultures has been added. Think vast steppes intrepid horse riders and the intricacies of a lifestyle unlike our own. Their stories too are captured here.

The library is a presence library. Books and journals always remain on site. They’re not for borrowing only for in-house consultation. However weekend borrowing of monographs is allowed. Journals and reference works are exceptions.

Only part of the collection is openly accessible. The rest requires a request from the magazine. This isn’t done digitally. You’ll need to fill out a loan slip. If you want to make this request in advance you can email details to Magazin.Archbib@uni-bonn.de.

A book scanner is available for everyone. Remember to bring your own storage device. Copyright compliance is the reader’s responsibility. This library is for everyone. University members and guests alike are welcome.

There’s a student tea kitchen on the fourth floor. It offers snacks and drinks for a small donation. Its key can be obtained at the information desk. The reading area provides 20 workstations. University of Bonn Wi-Fi is available. There’s also a research PC for literature searches.

The library’s collection is systematically organized. An in-house system and a floor plan are available at the library for guidance. This is a place of research collaboration and learning. It’s more than just a library it’s a portal to the past. It’s a vital part of the University of Bonn’s academic landscape.
