Imagine, shelves stretching into infinity. That’s the initial feeling one gets upon entering the Biblioteca Vasconcelos. It’s more than just a library. It is a modern architectural marvel right here in Mexico City.

The Biblioteca Vasconcelos is dedicated to José Vasconcelos. He was a philosopher and former president of the National Library of Mexico. Known by the press as the Megabiblioteca, it stands in the Buenavista neighborhood.

President Vicente Fox inaugurated the Biblioteca Vasconcelos on May 16, 2006. He called it one of the most advanced constructions of the 21st century. He predicted people all over the world would talk about it.

Spanning 38000 square meters, the library had an initial cost of 954 million pesos. That’s roughly 98 million US dollars. It’s located at the Buenavista train station. Here, the Metro, suburban train, and Metrobús converge.

However, the Biblioteca Vasconcelos faced early challenges. It had to close in March 2007 due to construction defects. The Superior Auditor of the Federation found 36 construction irregularities. These included misplaced marble blocks costing 15 million pesos.

During Calderón’s administration, restoration efforts continued. A further investment of 32 million pesos helped address the issues. The library reopened to the public in November 2008 after 22 months.

Mexican architects Alberto Kalach and Juan Palomar designed the library. Lily Carr described its interior as a cavernous, hollowed-out space. Suspended shelves create an awe-inspiring spectacle. It immerses visitors in the architects’ vision of a library as a container of human knowledge.

The Biblioteca Vasconcelos is adorned with sculptures by Mexican artists. Gabriel Orozco’s Ballena, or Whale, sits prominently in the center of the building.

The library boasts a collection of over 600000 volumes. Its hanging steel shelves create an illusion of endlessness.

The Biblioteca Vasconcelos is adjacent to the Buenavista train station and a shopping center. It’s also near the famous El Chopo cultural street market.

Moreover, the Biblioteca Vasconcelos is an example of ecologically sensitive architecture. Natural outdoor light illuminates the building almost entirely. This design minimizes damage to the books.

The library is designed to eventually hold up to 2 million books. It can welcome about 5000 visitors daily. José Vasconcelos would be proud. He was a strong advocate for reading in the early 20th century. The Biblioteca Vasconcelos stands as a testament to his vision. It is a beacon of knowledge and architectural innovation in Mexico City.
